The latest phase of the £34 million Energy for Londoners programme has been unveiled by Sadiq Khan. The mayor’s new scheme aims to make energy bills more affordable, workplaces more energy efficient and supply London with cleaner and more local energy sources like solar power.

The UK’s low carbon and renewable energy (LCRE) economy swelled by 5% to reach a total worth of £42.6 billion in 2016. That’s according to the Office for National Statistics’ (ONS) Environmental Accounts for the year, which says the sector continued to account for around 1% of the UK’s non-financial turnover.

From today, more than three million British Gas customers on its standard variable tariff will be hit with a 12.5pc rise in electricity prices – the equivalent of an extra £76 a year added to bills.
